KPCC Southern California Public Radios Product Manager, Mobile News & Monetization serves as the primary role in the execution of product strategies supporting KPCCs mission to build sustainable products and services for mobile news consumers. This includes surfacing requirements from all stakeholders, facilitating development and implementation of new business processes, and acting as liaison with third party vendors and internal development teams. It includes defining, documenting, developing, deploying, measuring, and monetizing mobile products throughout the product life cycle. The Product Manager, Mobile News & Monetization works shoulder-to-shoulder with the UX & Technology team to create optimal mobile news experiences for general audiences as well as members and supporters of KPCC Southern California Public Radio.
Managing the requirements of various teams and distilling them into executable plans of action is a regular function of this position. Organizational, communication, and mediation skills will be stretched. The Product Manager is responsible for producing concepts, wireframes, and any other documentation required to prioritize mobile news products and digital membership features and account for testable QA goals post development.
Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a member-supported public radio network that operates across a range of platforms, including FM radio, web, apps, events, and social media. Reaching more than 700,000 listeners every week and a growing digital audience, SCPR is the most listened to public radio news service of any kind in Southern California and serves the diverse communities of Southern California with award winning local news coverage as well as the most NPR (National Public Radio) content available anywhere in the region.
Position Responsibility:
Define mobile product vision for KPCC in partnership with the editorial, digital, and management team and build online audience and revenue through the successful development and deployment of mobile products.
Identify market opportunities and define mobile product vision and strategy.
Actively participate in all functions of the mobile product lifecycle, including audience insight, product definition, requirements gathering, business partnership development, project management, information architecture and design, audience testing, and metrics.
Create prototypes using a variety of methods to create actionable design concepts that require little explanation/documentation.
Work in partnership with designers and developers with the goal to hit deadlines and ship amazing products. Remove blockers, facilitate communication in and among teams, and set high quality expectations.
Document those requirements for KPCC Southern California Public Radio upper management.
Articulate product features for design and development team through the development of collections of user stories that document product features.
Work with the editorial team to define mobile news features and enhancements and improve internal workflows.
Conduct user research to identify new areas of opportunity for KPCC to deliver products that delight and grow our audience.
Help bridge KPCC editorial, membership and product development disciplines to create integrated solutions that harmonize content, design, technology and revenue.
Increase KPCCs revenue through the creation of new, valuable membership products and services.
Help to maintain previously launched products, and identify ways to improve or alter those products.
Lead usability testing and use findings to identify refinements to existing products.
Lead the process of QA/UAT, gathering necessary feedback from stakeholders.
Help triage bugs on development and live site/app issues.
Orchestrate product roadmaps that deliver meaningful, focused releases to customers while affording maximum flexibility for dev teams and changing priorities
Assist with the discovery, cultivation, and successful negotiation of new business partnerships in support of KPCCs mobile strategy.
Identify and meet with third-party vendors and partners that already provide, or may in the future provide, mobile services to KPCC Southern California Public Radio.
Prepare feature-set comparisons and other data to rank and compare third-party vendors we work with now or are considering working with.
Manage all third party vendor relationships relating to mobile and monetization.
Ensure that analytics is properly incorporated into product development efforts.
Provide regular reporting on the progress of launched initiatives, including both audience and revenue metrics.
Develop and execute communications/marketing plans to promote KPCC digital products and services
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience in computer science, journalism, media, communications, design and/or equivalent experience.
7+ years of industry experience and 5+ years of product management experience.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Deep understanding of the digital user experience, incl. user behavior, personalization.
Exceptional taste and a strong sense of aesthetics as they apply to brand perception and emotional dimensions of design.
Experience with web and application development, especially native mobile SDKs, Ruby on Rails, test driven development, database schemas, and JavaScript frameworks.
Strong skills in wireframing, rapid prototyping and iterative design process.
Proficient in either basic design tools & process (Photoshop, Illustrator, sketching) or basic web development skills (HTML, CSS, Javascript).
Strong analytical background with deep experience using tools such as Google Analytics.
Experience in online advertising, traffic-acquisition (SEO) and online media publishing.
Broad understanding of internet business models and the ability to perform basic financial projections.
Strong understanding of technical and system-related component of potential and existing products. Must be able to identify and define technical requirements.
Broad knowledge of relevant technologies, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design, media streaming technologies.
Experience shipping native mobile apps on at least one major platform, including the implementation of app analytics measuring usage and engagement.
Good understanding of project management (Agile) and software engineering processes and practices.
Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
The ability to think both critically and strategically.
Must be equally comfortable in detailed technological conversations with engineers and covering conceptual topics with editorial, underwriting, and membership teams.
