The Sr. Mobile Developer will work closely with the technical and editorial staff to aid in the creation, production and maintenance of mobile/digital initiatives and infrastructure for 89.3 KPCC Southern California Public Radio (KPCC.org). S/he works in a creative and technical capacity to build and maintain underlying and top-level systems that support high-volume mobile content distribution for KPCC public radio audiences. Candidate will work in a hands-on capacity to build, maintain and deploy mobile-focused websites and apps for KPCC. The Mobile Developer works on a variety of digital media platform products including websites, iPhone/Android/iPad apps, mobile websites, streaming and downloadable audio and video services, RSS feeds, podcasts, and more. Candidate will report to the Manager, UX Design & Development.
Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a member-supported public radio network that operates several radio stations in and around Los Angeles. Reaching more than 700,000 listeners every week, SCPR is the most listened to public radio news service of any kind in Southern California and serves the diverse communities of Southern California with award winning local news coverage as well as the most NPR (National Public Radio) content available anywhere in the region.
Position Responsibility:
Responds to daily production priorities and development requests defined and assigned by the Manager, UX Design & Development
Pairs with other developers to develop standards, tools, patterns and best practices. Performs regular code reviews to ensure a high standard of software quality.
Builds consumer-facing mobile products that support SCPRs mission and audience growth
Conceives and builds features that improve the audience experience (sites and apps) and the editorial workflow process (CMS and newsroom tools)
Stays current with emerging trends in application/systems development and delivery to ensure the organization uses the latest technologies
Works in conjunction with designer, programmers, and producers to create and support systems which allow digital and broadcast staff to build, maintain and deliver online content via a broad range of vehicles, including websites, mobile devices, streaming and downloaded media, newsletters, podcasts, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience in computer science, journalism, media, communications, design and/or equivalent experience.
5-7 years software development experience
Experience in web development at every level of the solution stack.
Experience with building apps using the iOS SDK and XCode
Mastery of a full-stack MVC web framework (we use Rails) and object-oriented design
Experience with development and performance tuning of MySQL database-driven websites.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Mastery of iOS SDK and Cocoa development
Experience with Objective-C or RubyMotion
Experience building mobile apps for large consumer-facing services
Mastery of Rails/Ruby, or equivalent MVC framework
Mastery of local and server data storage, relational databases (MySQL) and NoSQL databases (Redis, MongoDB)
Experience with Git
Experience with JS frameworks (jQuery, Underscore.js)
Experience maintaining, customizing and extending content management systems
Experience publishing and consuming APIs using REST/JSON
Solid oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment.
Familiarity with communicating technical requirements.
Ability to analyze requirements and provide accurate work estimates.
Ability to work under heavy deadline pressure.
Ability to work with little supervision.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Experience in working with large-scale, consumer-oriented digital products
Experience with media sites
Experience with creating mobile sites and apps
Experience working with native mobile SDKs for iOS and Android
Experience with current tools & techniques for building rich client-side applications, including Node.js, Backbone.js, and CoffeeScript.
Experience with HTML5/CSS3 and related technologies: particularly CSS media queries, HTML5 video/audio, JS feature detection, geolocation and web storage, and Canvas.
Familiarity with public radio a plus.
