| Description: | Position Summary:
Marketplace is public radios leading business news program. And the Business of Health care is one of Marketplaces most important beats. Health care spending is one sixth of the US economy. It affects all of us. Yet the way money moves through the system is a mystery to most people. Marketplaces health care reporter will bring the industry to light with dynamic, original and insightful reporting. S/he will be responsible for a mix of features and daily spots across all the Marketplace shows, as well as digital elements for the web and a comfort with blogging. S/he will have the opportunity to tell in-depth character driven stories, collaborate with investigative reporting groups, and put breaking news on the air and on the web.
The senior reporter will work in one city, but that location will be determined through the recruitment & hiring process.
Position Responsibility:
Develop health care beat and establish priorities and goals. Pitch and report ideas for daily spots and features on the subject of health care.
Deliver substantive reports quickly on varied subjects. Reporter should expect to spend 60 percent of time on health care, the rest on general assignments on varied subjects as shows need.
Provide live reports and two-ways at expert level.
Deliver stories with fully developed on-air style and originality in writing, within a Marketplace programs writing style and pace.
Develop ideas/proposals for reports and programs, both by the reporter and other reporters, hosts and commentators.
Provide breaking-news spots and live two-ways to the Morning Report as part of a rotation of reporters.
Gather information and audio for reports and programs.
May oversee the work of interns.
Operate production and studio equipment and facilities.
Assist other reporters, producers and editors with information.
Serve as lead on special projects/series

Required Education and Experience:
BA degree or equivalent
Seven or more years reporting or similar experience. Most experience should be at a national level. Potential to train as a fill-in or full-time host.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Fully developed on-air style and originality in writing.
Wide and deep knowledge of program reporting areas of coverage, developed source network.
Compelling story teller.
Ability to deliver sophisticated analytical reporting.
Capacity to report quickly -- quick turnaround.
Ability to develop stories with multiple interviews, scene changes and strong knowledge of subject matter.
Depth and Breadth:
Able to tackle very difficult projects and assignments.
Brings special expertise to one or several topic areas.
Finds unexpected angles in stories, even in saturated topics.
Depth of knowledge and experience in an area is important but breadth in terms of general industry knowledge is important.
Broad variety of complex assignments.
Stories delivered are at a level comparable to top-quality reporters in the field or on beat.
Complexity, Autonomy, and Decision-Making:
Brings complicated ideas to air with little need for direction from editor.
Regularly sets fresh directions in stories.
Determines process approach and necessary resources for a given project/assignment
Adapts procedures to accomplish more complex tasks.
Manages own work and the work of interns on a daily basis.
Familiarity with social media, particularly Facebook and Twitter
Capacity to do live reports and host two-ways at expert level
Ability to work from remote location and handle relations with host news organization.
Demonstrated reporting and production skills
Proven interviewing techniques
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Able to manage multiple assignments of short and long duration
