Description:Position Summary:

The Associate Editor, Online is an integral part of the KPCC.org online news team. This position helps select, produce and edit news content for KPCC’s website, mobile and social platforms as appropriate. The Associate Editor, Online, assists the Managing Editor/Digital with planning daily coverage priorities and presentation of news content on KPCC.org, and fills in for the Managing Editor when necessary. The Editor works closely with the entire news team to establish a consistent editorial voice and style, including the preparation of visual elements. This position requires the ability to handle daily news events while balancing non-deadline enterprise efforts, including series and projects. Shifts will vary and may include early morning or late evening hours.

The Associate Editor, Online provides editorial leadership in developing multimedia, especially video and multimedia presentations. The Associate Editor, Online will create vibrant, interactive, information-driven Web content for kpcc.org. The position involves staying abreast of breaking and regional news; developing story ideas for the site; editing radio scripts as needed for online presentation; and working with other editors and program producers to coordinate and enrich KPCC’s digital news presence.

Position Responsibility:

• Generates and develops ideas for coverage and presentation that build a growing, loyal audience and create community.
• Posts and builds on stories from local and national wire services.
• Works with reporters in the field, makes calls, researches and vets information as necessary to develop and augment breaking stories.
• Aggregates content and follows developing news stories for KPCC blogs.
• Maintains consistent voice and style across KPCC news stories and blogs.
• Develops and produces unique Web-only content.
• Edits and updates KPCC’s News website daily.
• Works with show producers, editors and hosts to identify online opportunities that complement or augment broadcast content.
• Develops, produces, and writes unique Web-only content that enhances and augments on-air news reporting.
• Supports online production through research and writing, edits Web audio and video, and collects assets for multimedia elements.
• Assists reporters and videographers with editing and occasional shooting of regular video segments.
• Maintains and builds presence on external social networking sites.
• Responsible for high standards of accuracy, production quality and timeliness.
• Fills in for the Managing Editor when necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree required.
• Five years experience in broadcast, Web or print journalism. Demonstrated ability to write and edit news copy using Associated Press editing guidelines.
• Experience in Web production.
• Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Final Cut Pro.
• Experience working with HTML and CSS.
• Experience in planning and developing web special projects and series.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Strong news judgment.
• Outstanding editing and writing skills, particularly for the Web. We expect to see writing samples.
• A sense for story ideas.
• Basic knowledge of headline SEO
• Flair for turning raw copy and quotes into an engaging and interesting story
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues in multiple departments/divisions.
• Strong interest in local and regional news and general depth of knowledge about issues and current events.
• Ability to work with changing deadlines and in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated research skills in a professional capacity.
• Flexibility, ability to respond to changing priorities.
• Strong online visual design sensibility.
• Developing ability to coach and guide Reporters and Interns.
• Proficiency in digital audio editing.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Photoshop.
• Familiarity w/file sharing and delivery techniques from both internal & external sources.
• Basic knowledge of broadcast standards and ethics.
• Developing ability to coach and guide Reporters and Interns
• Familiarity w/on-line content management systems
• Ability to encourage collaboration and team work among Reporters and across the newsroom

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Working knowledge of RSS feeds and XML.
• Knowledge of scripting languages such as JavaScript helpful.
• Interest in social networking, content aggregation, and new trends in online media.
• Understanding of semantic markup and accessibility standards.
• Experience working with streaming media, especially audio.
• Experience with content management systems.
• Experience designing content-heavy, information-rich Web sites.
• Prior work experience with an online content provider.
