The Senior Software Engineer will work on a collaborative team composed of different disciplines to build and enhance the Public Insight Network digital platform at American Public Media. S/he will be involved in the development, testing, deployment, and support of software applications.
The Senior Software Engineer will do software development primarily for the Web platform using open source technologies such as PHP, JavaScript and MySQL. S/he will be attuned to developments in software development, web-related technologies, and information technology in general.
This position is grant funded through March 31, 2013.
Position Responsibility:
Bring creative approaches to the project team.
Understand the business and technology goals; present options and considerations in solution development and problem solving.
Participate in project planning; meet deliverable deadlines and communicate status
Participate in development of system requirements
Work with customers and other developers to define data and work / process flow requirements
Code, test, and implement software solutions
Ensure that project methodologies, policies, and procedures are followed
Ensure the mission, vision and values of the organization are reflected in his/her work, methodologies and interactions
Utilize and follow project development lifecycle (waterfall, agile) steps and methodologies in daily work
Be available to play various roles in the project process (develop skills as needed)
Stay connected with customers to maintain communication, e.g. knowledge of plan, progress, risks, need for information or prioritization

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field
5-7 years experience to include the following:
o Object Oriented analysis and design
o Open source technologies such as Apache, Linux, PHP, Perl, JavaScript and MySQL
o Web design patterns, including MVC frameworks and REST APIs
Experience working in multiple capacities, solo and in groups, on small- and medium-sized projects, with technical and non-technical customers, in a creative, dynamic, and fast-paced environment.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills, including listening skills
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, both in written and oral form
A working knowledge of available information technology, products, and industry trends.
Knowledge of Information Technology tools and Information Systems development and diagnostic methodologies and best practices
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to coach, train, and do paired programming with less experienced team members
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Active experience and participation in at least one of the following: social networking software, mashups, widgets and APIs, or as part of an open source developer community
Experience with and affinity for open source projects
Experience with both waterfall and agile development methodologies, e.g. requirements analysis via use case methodology, XP/Scrum
Experience with ExtJS JavaScript framework
