| Description: | Position Summary:
The Managing Editor supervises SCPRs reporting and editing staffs and oversees their daily newsgathering efforts to provide timely, high-quality news and feature coverage for broadcast, web, mobile and public engagement platforms. S/he works closely with the news management team and in particular with senior editors for the broadcast, web and mobile platforms to ensure effective communication and coordination among managers and front-line staff. The Managing Editor/Newsgathering edits and produces content for broadcast and digital as needed and is responsible for skill development and performance progress among staffs s/he directs. The Managing Editor helps maintain SCPRs high standards for journalistic quality and community service.
Position Responsibility:
Provide leadership and direction for reporters and editors carrying out SCPRs coverage mission on radio, web, mobile, social and public forum platforms
Assign and direct daily coverage and enterprise, working with team of assigning editors
Communicate continuously, collaboratively and effectively with broadcast and web/mobile leadership to deliver coverage for shows, newscasts, the Web and mobile sites and through live events
Work cooperatively with other senior editors, including enterprise/investigative editor and platform editors, on cross-desk collaborations to elevate quality and impact of news report
Manage daily and weekly news planning process through effective system of meetings, one-on-one communication and use of electronic/written communication systems
Working with other senior editors, executive editor and technology leadership, develop workflow and training approaches aimed at goal of multiplatform news report
Edit copy and tape, audition actualities and other sound elements and provide final approval for broadcast
Work collaboratively to support program staff and newscasters. Participate in editorial projects and special programming.
Provide clear guidance, feedback and supervision to assigned staff. This includes editorial aspects and performance assessment.
Work with other members of the management team to provide strong, consistent leadership of the department.
Assist in development and implementation of editorial and programming policies to achieve consistent, reliable quality and depth.
Working with executive editor and other senior leadership, recruit and hire journalists with variety of skills and experience for multiplatform news report in diverse marketplace
Supervise, train and manage direct reporting and editing staff through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback. Involve HR on performance issues as needed.
Foster a creative and productive work environment. Create development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
Assess performance of assigned staff by establishing standards, working to encourage professional development.
Represent newsroom internally and externally.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree from accredited university.
Combined 10 years or more of reporting, editing or producing experience, including 5 years or more broadcast experience
Working knowledge of, and affinity for, web journalism in newsgathering and storytelling.
Strong basic management skills, including ability to teach, coach and advance skills of those under direct supervisions
Superior skills in editing for broadcast and web
Experience in maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
Significant experience providing work direction or supervision.
Significant experience assigning stories and editing copy
Experience with digital audio editing systems.
Experience with Internet news production and presentation.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Strong writing, editing, and radio production skills essential.
Knowledge of broadcast journalism with knowledge of public media preferred
Knowledge of radio, web, and print style.
Ability to make quick command decisions.
Ability to effectively execute multiple assignments on deadline
Leadership and personnel skills and ability to develop high performing teams.
Ability to motivate, train and grow employees.
Ability to work collegially and creatively with staff and colleagues at all levels of experience

Preferred Skills and Experience:
Fluency in Spanish or other languages commonly used in southern California
