Description:Position Summary:

The Correspondent will be responsible for focused coverage of early childhood development and education, covering the years from birth up to kindergarten. The Correspondent will research, report, write and file in-depth on-air and online reports for our multi-platform newscasts and talk shows. S/he will provide material for station's broadcast and digital news service and assist with the development of multiplatform reporting projects including live events. The Correspondent will contribute story ideas and assist in fine-tuning others' ideas as well as being a resource to other Content staff. The coverage of this beat will allow KPCC to become the go-to source for issues surrounding early childhood education and its impact on our diverse communities.

This is a grant funded position.

Position Responsibility:

• Report on early childhood for parents, educators and the broader community of interest
• Pitch, report and produce news stories and feature stories.
• Deliver substantive reports on the assigned subject on a tight deadline
• Provide high quality “live” reports with newscasts and talk show and host 2-ways
• Assemble, edit and mix stories for air
• Produce for website, social and mobile channels with writing and photography (supplying additional audio, visual material related Web resources).
• Work with news editors to generate ideas.
• Develop and cultivate sources: Utilize PIN, digital and in-person interaction to build broad source base and audience relationships.
• Assist other reporters, producers and editors with information.
• Assist in special programming, including Crawford Family Forum events.
• Operate production and studio equipment.
• Work with editors, reporters and operations staff to coordinate content.
• Establish priorities and goals for beat.
• Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
• Ten or more years experience in journalism, reporting and editing.
• Experience and enthusiasm for using internet channels (including mobile and social) for newsgathering and interaction with sources, collaborators and audience members.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Demonstrated radio reporting, digital news and production skills.
• Strong writing and reporting skills.
• Skilled at developing own stories and at judging which stories to pursue and how effectively to complete assignments.
• Facility and knowledge of web and mobile tools and culture.
• Ability to deliver stories of the highest standard as measured by clarity, balance, creativity, originality, cogent analysis, thoroughness, effective production, eloquence and compelling delivery.
• Facility with source and beat development; subject-matter expertise a plus.
• Delivers stories with highly developed on-air style and originality in writing.
• Ability to function as a leader in news judgment, influences agenda setting
• Commitment to enact best journalism practices.
• Experience in or familiarity with public radio news.
• Ability to use sound, when available, to create scenes that engage the listener and convey the emotion of the story
• Ability to consistently produce timely and substantive reports on a tight deadline.
• Ability to develop and execute big projects
• Excellent in live reports and host two-ways at expert level.
• Fully competent in use of recording and production equipment
• Ability to work simultaneously on short and long-term projects
• Ability to develop stories with multiple interviews, scene changes, and strong knowledge of subject matter
• Ability to mentor and guide the work of others
• Ability to represent SCPR News in official functions
• Recognized internally and externally as expert in area of coverage
• Extraordinary ability to synthesize.
• Ability to lead the organization and innovation in reporting
• Specialized skills and very wide experience and accomplishment
• Able to manage complex internal and external relationships

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Fluency in Spanish preferred. Fluency in other languages desirable.
