| Description: | Position Summary:
The Associate Producer will work closely with the Host, Senior Producer and the other Associate Producer of Morning Edition to produce a daily news magazine program that combines regional and national content. The Associate Producer's primary responsibility is to create compelling local content for the show, including host interviews and other show segments. He/She will also work to increase Morning Editions presence through social media and digital channels.
Position Responsibility:
Hands-on production; cut, edit audio, pulls news copy; schedules studio time
Contributes ideas for future broadcasts
Researches sources/guests, background, context
Propose, locate/contact, pre-interview, evaluate guests; book guests and confirm bookings
Edits interviews
Writes introductions and questions for scheduled interviews
Writes promos & scripts, editing copies, coordinating and timing
Produces and edits field segments
Prepares material for social media and digital channels
Serves as backup director for the show
Writes billboards and other copy as needed
Rewrites copy for accuracy and clarity
Supports hosts and prepares briefing materials for host; may handle host travel logistics
Maintain archives
Arrange for duplicate copies of content (internally & externally)
Directs work of interns; Informal trainer and mentor for assistant producer
Screen ideas being pitched
Maintains relationship with technical staff, audio engineers and other departments
Fills in for Producer
Supports other MPR news programs and special programming as needed
Coordinates special projects
Other duties as assigned
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
Three or more years production, editorial or related experience
Experience with digital audio editing systems
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Solid news judgment
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to edit audio
Ability to generate fresh and strong ideas for the show
Ability to evaluate and organize a variety of content options
Ability to work interdependently within a team while maintaining effective communication and accountability with minimal supervision
Ability to react to breaking news, changing situations, and changing the program accordingly
Excellent organizational skills; effective with details and deadlines
Ability to learn new industry specific skills as required
Research skills and knowledge of various techniques including internet, library, etc
Ability to understand and deliver high-quality service to multiple constituencies
Interests and general knowledge of news, current events and public radio industry
Interpersonal skills, including ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a variety of individuals, such as audience, guests, hosts, and other MPR staffs and customer service skills
Skill and experience in field production
Knowledge and familiarity with producing a live broadcast
Ability to direct and motivate interns
Ability to prioritize communication in terms of problems and changes occurring
Knowledge of recent history of shows, and a thorough understanding of the vision for the show
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Experience with Dalet newsroom software
Familiarity with recent Minnesota news stories
