| Description: | Position Summary:
The Data Journalist will be responsible for spotting important trends and patterns, gathering, parsing and visualizing large data sets to help deepen KPCCs coverage of news online and on air. He or she will develop creative solutions on how to present information to a broad audience as well as out-of-the-box solutions to importing and converting datasets. The Data Journalist is expected to use his/her background as a data analyst and developer to find new, innovative ways to marry the two to produce multimedia pieces that visually illustrate the news and embody a sense of discovery.
Position Responsibility:
Collaborates with KPCC interactive, web, and radio producers, to represent information to deepen on air and online stories.
Works closely with Online Managing Editor to identify recurring data sets and long-term projects that will add depth to ongoing KPCC coverage of issues related to crime, health, the Southern California economy and other topics
Identifies opportunities and builds tools that can quickly visualize complex data sets for daily stories and features
Develops ideas/proposals for coverage streams, special reports, and editorially-driven custom applications
Encourages and curates conversation in a tone consistent with KPCCs voice and vision.
Cultivates sources, identifies important trends in local news, and collects and verifies information through a variety of online and offline channels, and shares with other KPCC reporters/programs.
Provides ongoing insight and counsel to other KPCC.org shows and departments about their online and digital projects and ambitions.
Works collaboratively with other reporters, programmers and technical staff.
Ensures that all materials produced for the site meet KPCC.org program standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, objectivity and balance.
Consults regularly with Online Producers and Online Managing Editor over metrics and identifies opportunities to track success, grow traffic and engagement online.
Translates wireframes and requirements into visually compelling and attractive designs
Identifies and tests tools, techniques and practices for data and information visualization
Identifies, collects and formats data sources for visualization
Maintains and shares awareness of industry trends and new technologies and explore those that would benefit KPCC and the audience
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in design, informatics, journalism or similar field.
4-8 years journalism experience in traditional media and a minimum of 5 years hands-on experience in development
Experience building data-drive Google Maps applications.
Minimum 6 years experience working with data sets and using data visualization tools to present qualitative and quantitative information in a website environment
Experience developing design and interaction patterns, style guides.
Experience with a wide set of tools and the comfort to get dirty when data doesn't come in a pristine condition.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Web savvy reporting, a consuming interest in Southern California news and politics, and a knack for quick, creative development
Strong knowledge of Javascript, including the use of frameworks such as Backbone. Experience with object-oriented programming and a familiarity with CoffeeScript is a plus.
First-rate writer and communicator with the ability to quickly identify news stories of interest
Working knowledge of GIS and open-source tools such as TileMill and QGIS.
Comfortable importing/exporting datasets from formats such as Shapefiles, GeoJSON and KML.
Deep familiarity with HTML and Web publishing tools
Working knowledge of Ruby on Rails, particularly at the template level.
Good research, organizational and planning skills
Ability to work under pressure with discretion and mature judgment
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to maintain productive and positive communication with co-workers
Ability to work efficiently with limited direct supervision
Provide creative multimedia ideas for online interactive projects.
Knowledge of how to use data and design to foster engagement and knowledge sharing.
Knowledge of data visualization tools
Demonstrated ability to learn new tools
Understanding of data sets, cross-tabular relationships, and use in conjunction with qualitative analysis
Ability to interpret needs, objectives, and direction from multiple sources of input
Familiarity with technical issues around web development
Proven aptitude for quick creative thinking within demanding deadlines
Strong understanding of human-centered design methodologies
Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail in professional settings.
Strong problem solving and analytical skills
Ability to present technical information to non-technical audiences
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Knowledge of AP Style
Interest in Southern Californian news and politics, and understanding of the regions diverse communities and geography
Experience in journalistic/multimedia training.
